Treats, Not Tricks: How Service Dogs Learn Good Manners Everywhere

While most dogs are busy sniffing out treats this Halloween season, our pups are learning that good manners are the real reward!
Between pumpkins on porches, rustling costumes, and children dashing from door to door, fall is full of distractions. But for Service Dogs Alabama’s dogs in training, it’s all part of the lesson — learning to stay calm and focused no matter what spooky surprises come their way.

Labracadabra!

A little focus (and a fun hat) can make treats disappear!

Impulse Control 101

From the very beginning, our dogs are taught one of the hardest (and most impressive) skills — self-control. Impulse control isn’t just about ignoring a tasty treat on the floor (although that’s certainly part of it!); it’s about managing every instinctive reaction that could get in the way of being a reliable service dog.

During puppy class, volunteers might drop treats on the ground, move toys around, or even create a mini obstacle course of shoes and other exciting items. Puppies learn to “leave it” and stay focused on their handler, no matter the temptation.

Leave It Like a Pro!

Ophelia shows that self-control can be just as sweet as candy.

But impulse control extends far beyond “leave it”. Our dogs also practice:

  • Not jumping on people or other dogs, even when they’re excited to see a new friend.

  • Ignoring distractions, like cats or squirrels.

  • Waiting calmly at doorways, instead of darting outside.

  • Resisting the urge to snatch food left on the floor or counter.

Every challenge, big or small, teaches our pups that patience, focus, and calm behavior bring the best results and builds the foundation for a successful life as a service dog.

Manners That Go Everywhere

Pumpkin Pals in Training!

Our pups take in all the sights, smells, and pumpkins — practicing calm in a busy world.

Good manners go far beyond sit and stay. Service Dogs Alabama dogs practice polite behavior in every setting — from walking calmly beside their handler in busy stores, to ignoring tempting smells at restaurant patios, to remaining composed when strangers reach down to pet them or when loud noises appear unexpectedly. Even at a crowded pumpkin patch or a Halloween event, with children running around in costumes and rustling candy bags, our pups learn to stay focused and confident. These experiences teach them how to navigate excitement and distractions with poise — skills they’ll carry into every future environment.

These skills begin as early as the puppy phase, when volunteers guide them through exposure to new sights, sounds, and smells. They continue to grow through every stage of training: from structured programs with inmate trainers, to reintroduction outings in public spaces, and finishing exercises with professional trainers. Along the way, each dog learns to balance curiosity with discipline, building the focus and reliability they’ll need as life-changing companions. By the time they graduate, these dogs are the definition of composed, courteous, and ready to serve.

Steady as a Pumpkin Patch!

Focused and fun — every step helps our pups master manners in motion.

The Magic Behind Focus

It may look like magic, but there’s no hocus pocus involved — just science, patience, and heart. Focus is a skill dogs develop over time through careful guidance and consistent practice. Our trainers use repetition, positive reinforcement, and structured challenges to teach dogs to remain calm and attentive, even amid distractions like crowds, noise, or sudden movements.

Just like people, dogs develop emotional control through trust and practice. During Halloween outings, this might mean ignoring a child in a scary costume, resisting the urge to chase a fluttering decoration, or calmly walking past a pile of pumpkins. These playful “tests” help puppies learn to pause, assess, and respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Over time, these lessons transform playful, excitable pups into confident, dependable partners — ready to face the world alongside their future handlers.
